We're a 1.5-acre Urban Farm Where Plants Meet Animals

City Farmers Nursery is more than just a plant haven; it's a delightful urban farm experience that brings joy to visitors of all ages.

Our animals are our pets, and set us apart from typical nurseries in San Diego.

As you wander through our 1.5-acre property, you'll encounter a menagerie of farm animals. Our resident mini donkeys. Darla and Alfalfa, are always a hit with children and adults alike.

You'll also see a variety of poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, strutting about their enclosures. Our friendly goats, part of a local milk co-op, are eager to greet visitors at the fence.

For those interested in backyard chicken keeping, we offer a rotating selection of chicks seasonally, with various breeds available throughout the year. To support urban farmers, we stock a comprehensive range of animal feeds and supplies, ensuring you have everything needed to care for your backyard flock or small farm animals.

Our animal area also includes rabbits, turtles, and tortoises, creating a diverse and educational environment for visitors. While not a petting zoo, our animal section provides a unique opportunity for city dwellers to connect with farm life.

At City Farmers Nursery, we believe in fostering a connection between people, plants, and animals. Our animals are one of the last free places for children to greet farm animals and not only adds charm to your visit but also serves as an educational resource, helping to inspire the next generation of urban farmers and animal lovers.

We offer a range of practical services to help you succeed in your gardening endeavors:

A San Diego Legacy Since 1972

City Farmers Nursery has been a cornerstone of the San Diego community since its founding in 1972 by Bill Tall, affectionately known as Farmer Bill. Starting as a small roadside stand, the nursery has grown into a 1.5-acre destination for gardening enthusiasts. Bill’s vision was to create a place that not only offered quality plants but also provided free gardening advice and education to all visitors.

Over the years, City Farmers has expanded its offerings to include a wide range of native plants, edibles, and ornamental varieties. The nursery is dedicated to supporting local schools by helping establish gardens and providing resources for educational programs. Community give-back is a key part of its mission, with regular donations to local nonprofits.

City Farmers also hosts free events throughout the year, including workshops and classes that promote sustainable gardening practices. Services such as soil testing, plant diagnosis, and space planning are available to assist gardeners in their projects.

Today, under the leadership of Bill's son Sam Tall, City Farmers Nursery continues to thrive as a family-owned business, maintaining its commitment to quality, education, and community support while honoring the legacy of its roots.
